Keep In Step With The Spirit

“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”(Galatians 5:25; NIV)

As I sit down to write this blog post on “Humble, Spirit-led Service,” I wonder if any of you who may read it has ever been tempted to say, “Why all this focus on diligently seeking God? Shouldn’t we just go out and share the gospel?”

Now, most certainly, we SHOULD be focused on sharing the gospel, but hear also the words of A.W. Tozer which follow:

The popular notion that the first obligation of the church is to spread the gospel to the uttermost parts of the earth is false. Her first obligation is to be spiritually worthy to spread it. Our Lord said “Go ye,” but He also said, “Tarry ye,” and the tarrying had to come before the going. Had the disciples gone forth as missionaries before the day of Pentecost it would have been an overwhelming spiritual disaster, for they could have done no more than make converts after their own likeness.

(A.W. Tozer, “Of God And Men” Quoted in: “Gems From Tozer,” 73)

Tozer’s point is this: YES, we need to press on in sharing the gospel, however, it is important that we share the gospel out of God’s strength and notour own! As we press on in diligently seeking God – aiming to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength – He can grow us to be humble, Spirit-led servants that He can use mightily in the spread of His gospel!

Depending on God through His Word and through prayer is so very important for our growth as His humble, Spirit-led servants. Quoting from Tozer again . . .

Stop trying to compete with others. Give yourself to God and then be what and who you are without regard to what others think. Reduce your interests to a few. Don’t try to know what will be of no service to you. Avoid the digest type of mind. Learn to pray inwardly every moment. Practice candor, childlike honesty, humility. Pray for a single eye. Read less, but read more of what is important to your inner life. Call home your roving thoughts. Gaze on Christ with the eyes of your soul. Practice spiritual concentration.”

(A.W. Tozer, “Of God And Men” Quoted in: “Gems From Tozer,” 80)

The Apostle Paul said it this way:

“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”(Galatians 5:25; NIV)

I pray that we as the church in Stratford and area can be radically used by God for the eternal transformation of lives as we learn to humbly walk in step with the Spirit through God’s Word and through prayer!
